Artificial intelligence remains a hot topic. Its accessibility is at an all-time high as organizations seek new ways to use this technology. The possibilities are limitless as we push the boundaries of AI in general. There’s still much to learn, but even in current iterations, there’s continuous progress. Creations like ChatGPT, DALL E 2, and other generative AIs have brought about a new line of conversation—anxiety and uncertainty. We’ve created machines that can now construct creative ventures like photos, videos, music, text, etc. How do the humans in these industries have any job security? Surely AI will replace artists, musicians, writers, and anyone else in a creative profession, right? Such a belief is misplaced, but that doesn’t make it ridiculous. Tidbits of reality find their place in such a thought process.

Don’t Worry Creatives We’re Not Getting Replaced

The rise of discussions centered on AI and its place within creative professions has some artists worrying about their standing. As it is, the thought of an AI being able to write a blog for me quickly can be distressing. However, there’s no reason to fear the unknown. AI is a tool to be used, something that can help with content creation, not execute on its own. Notion recently added an AI feature that, like ChatGPT, requires only a question to be posed before writing a whole blog on the chosen topic. Does this mean writers are now useless or that their skills can be perfectly replicated? No. If you ask Notion’s AI, it has this response, “Generative AI is already having an impact on creative professions, from music and art to writing and beyond. However, many experts believe that AI will not replace human creativity but rather enhance it by providing new tools and insights. AI-generated works may be impressive, but they lack the human element that makes art, music, and literature unique and valuable.” Quite the take from a machine people worry might steal their job.

This Is A Tool Creatives Can Take Advantage Of

Instead of worrying about job security, professionals in creative roles should utilize AI to elevate their work to new heights. Those who figure out how to implement AI in producing creative works will find an advantage. AI‘s role in creative ventures can vary based solely on the user’s desires. There are ethical issues to be discussed here, and in future blogs, those topics will be addressed. Still, the tool can be truly transformational if creatives utilize AI in concert with their own work. These beliefs are mirrored in Notion’s AI. I asked it about generative AI and its effect on creative professions. The response was interesting. “The use of AI in creative professions raises the question of whether the technology is being used to support or replace human creativity. As such, it is important to recognize and preserve the value of human creativity in these fields. Despite these concerns, the impact of generative AI on creative professions is still evolving. It will depend on how it is used and integrated into the creative process. AI will likely continue to play a growing role in the creative industries.”

The Fear Mongering Must Stop

All of this to say, let’s not create doomsday scenarios quite yet. Human creativity can’t be truly replicated, and as such, there’s no need to be so pessimistic when it comes to AI’s impact on art. Alarm bells are ringing all over the world as professionals try to come to terms with AI as a new technology. This fear-mongering needs to stop because it is based on misconceptions and a lack of understanding about how generative AI works and its potential impact on creative professions. As the technology evolves, new roles will emerge that require human oversight and management of generative AI systems. Also, fear-mongering around generative AI ignores the many benefits and opportunities that this technology can bring to creative professions. With generative AI, artists, writers, and musicians can create new and innovative works that were previously impossible. Generative AI can also democratize access to creative tools and resources, enabling more people to participate in creative industries. We should focus on understanding the technology and its potential impact and work towards harnessing its benefits to create a more innovative and inclusive creative industry. There’s no benefit to creating harmful hypothetical situations. Let’s stay grounded, stay curious, and figure out how to best utilize this technology while intertwining human creativity and ingenuity.
